Fabric 101: A Beginner’s Guide
Fibers are the fundamental components that make up fabric, categorized into natural and synthetic (man-made and
regenerated) types. Natural fibers, derived from plants and animals, come in a variety of shapes and
sizes.
Synthetic fibers are typically filaments that are extruded and cut to a desired length. Manufactured
regenerated fibers are created through the chemical transformation of natural polymers.
Here’s a breakdown of the main fiber categories:
- Natural: Cotton, silk, linen (flax), hemp, leather, wool, and luxury fibers like alpaca and angora.
- Regenerated: Acrylic, acetate, and rayon.
- Synthetic: Polyester, spandex, and nylon.
- Blends: Poly/Cotton, Spandex/Cotton (blends aim to combine the best characteristics of each fabric,
e.g., polyester/cotton blends offer breathability and reduced wrinkling).
When working with fabric for home décor and design, these are the fabrics you’ll encounter most often:
Cotton: Abundant and available in various styles, colors, and prints. Cotton fabric tends to
shrink, so remember to account for this when ordering. Washing and drying cotton before use is highly
recommended.
Best Use: light-filtering curtains, quilts, toss pillows

Heavyweight Fabrics – Duck, Canvas, and Denim: These fabrics are thicker and heavier than basic
cotton, making them exceptionally sturdy.
Best Use: outdoor projects, toss pillow covers, upholstery
Premier Prints Classic Ticking Stripe
Flannel: Similar to basic cotton, but with a soft, napped surface on one side. Flannel can be
prone to pilling, so take care when washing and handling it.
Best Use: blankets, toss pillow covers
Fabricut Left Bank Flannel
Wool: A natural fiber with excellent insulation properties. Durable and inherently fire
retardant, 100% wool can be scratchy. Wool blends are ideal for home décor as they are softer and more
comfortable.
Best Use: blankets, toss pillow covers, upholstery
Wool
Blend Houndstooth Plaid Black/White
Home Décor or Upholstery Fabric: Typically sold on large rolls in wider lengths than other fabrics,
these are high-quality and durable for home use.
Best Use: curtains, rugs, upholstery
