Step-by-Step Instructions: Crafting Your Custom Notepad

1. Download and Print Your Lists

   Begin by downloading your preferred grocery list or task list templates from the links at the bottom of this page. I recommend selecting the “Fit” option in your printer settings to ensure the borders print nicely on your paper. Print approximately 12 copies to create a notepad with a good number of pages.

   

2. Prepare Your Paper

   Using scissors or a paper cutter, carefully trim off any excess white border from your printed sheets. Then, cut each sheet in half, yielding two lists per page. This will give you a more manageable size for your notepad.

   

3. Gather Your Supplies

   Now that you have your stack of list pages, gather the remaining materials:

   • A piece of chipboard (or a recycled cereal box, like I used) cut to the same size as your printed sheets. This will serve as the backing for your notepad.
   • A clamp or heavy-duty butterfly clips to hold the pages together while the glue dries.
   • Notepad glue. This specialized glue is thicker than regular school glue or Mod Podge, providing a stronger and more durable bond for your notepad pages. You can typically find it online or at craft stores for a reasonable price. In a pinch, Mod Podge can be used as a substitute, but notepad glue is recommended for optimal results.

   

4. Assemble and Clamp

   Carefully stack your chipboard backing and note pages, ensuring they are aligned. Clamp them together securely near the top edge. You can use small pieces of wood to stabilize the pages before clamping, but clamping alone often works just fine and saves you a trip to the garage!

   

5. Apply the Glue

   Using a paintbrush, begin applying the notepad glue to the top edge of the clamped pages. Ensure you cover the entire edge evenly.

   

6. Multiple Coats for Strength

   Apply the glue in three separate, thin coats. This prevents the glue from becoming too thick in certain spots and helps avoid the paper becoming overly saturated and soggy. Allow each coat to dry slightly before applying the next. Once the final coat is applied, leave the notepad clamped until it is completely dry – typically several hours or overnight is best.

   

7. Magnetic Mounting (Optional)

   Once the glue is completely dry, your notepad is essentially complete! If you want to make it fridge-friendly, cut two pieces of magnetic tape (available at craft stores and some home improvement stores) slightly smaller than the width of your notepad.

11. Pen/Pencil Holder – Attach to Notepad

    Glue this extra piece of decorated chipboard to the top of the notepad, allowing approximately 1 1/2″ to 2″ to hang over the edge. Punch two holes parallel to the notepad and about an inch apart from each other. The size of the holes may need to be adjusted depending on the diameter of your pen or pencil.

    

12. Pen/Pencil Holder – Create the Flaps

    Flip the entire notepad over and, using the razor blade or craft knife, lightly score a square around the holes on the back of the chipboard. Be careful not to cut all the way through.

    

13. Pen/Pencil Holder – Cut the Flaps

    Leaving the inner score marks intact, carefully cut the remaining sides of the square all the way through to the other side of the chipboard.

    

14. Pen/Pencil Holder – Fold Out the Flaps

    The inner score marks will allow you to easily fold out the newly cut flaps, creating a secure loop for your pen or pencil.

    

15. Final Touches

    Slip a pen or pencil through the holes. If necessary, use your hole punch to enlarge the holes for a better fit.
