A DIY Rapunzel Birthday Party: Bringing the Magic of Tangled to Life

Next week, our little girl turns four, and we’re fully immersed in party planning mode! This year presents a unique challenge, as we’re living in a house undergoing kitchen renovations, perpetually navigating various stages of organized chaos. However, it’s our four-year-old’s birthday, and a fantastic birthday party for the little ones will happen, even if it’s in… well, let’s just call it a vintage-inspired party room.

We’re so close to beginning the next phase of our house project: an addition that includes a brand-new kitchen. For now, we’re surrounded by blueprints and tackling mini-projects to prepare. It’s safe to say our house isn’t exactly “kid-friendly” or “party-ready” at the moment.

Therefore, we’ve decided to host the party at a family member’s condominium. The average age of the residents might be 80, but they do have a party room. The decor is a blast from the past, likely last updated sometime in the 80s. It promises to be an interesting setting!

Ayla is currently enchanted by a world of magic, filled with princesses and fairies. While she’s only seen a handful of Disney princess movies, she can recite the details of each princess in her collection like a seasoned baseball fan rattling off batting averages. She knows all the stats!

We’re committed to throwing her a birthday party that reflects her current interests, but we’re not fans of pre-packaged, generic princess party kits. After some negotiation (she may only be four, but she’s already showing the negotiation skills of a lawyer!), we decided on a Rapunzel theme. Rapunzel it is!

Thank goodness for Pinterest! Almost everything we’re creating for the party has been found or inspired by ideas we discovered on Pinterest. Here’s a sneak peek at our party plans:

Rapunzel Party Decorations: Creating a Tangled-Inspired Ambiance

Sun Bunting: Inspired by the iconic sun emblem from the movie Tangled, we’re creating our own sun bunting. We’re using our Silhouette Cameo cutting machine for this project. This machine is truly the star of our party decor, and we wouldn’t have embarked on so much DIY without it.
Braids: I found several skeins of yellow yarn on sale and bought them all! We’re braiding the yarn to hang from the ceiling, creating the illusion of Rapunzel’s long, flowing hair. We’re also making a large “A” initial.
Centerpieces: Each table will feature a candle holder adorned with the sun emblem. To create these, we’re using vellum paper and paint markers to create a soft glowing effect. We bought dozens of vases for our wedding ceremony years ago, and they’ve been used countless times since. They were a great purchase!
Backdrop: Floating lanterns are a central image in the Rapunzel movie, Tangled. Ayla is currently painting her own set of “glowy lanterns” on a large piece of blue canvas that we picked up at the fabric store. These will make the perfect backdrop for photos.

Rapunzel Party Food: Delicious Treats Fit for a Princess (and Ruffians!)

Boats: We’re making these adorable jello boats using blue jello and orange slices. We’re using the Silhouette cutting machine to create mini flags for the boats. These treats look straight out of Corona’s harbor!
Pub Food: Since a significant scene in the movie takes place in a pub, we’re embracing that theme and setting up a “build-your-own-sandwich” station. We’ll also have root beer on tap for a fun, pub-like feel. Let them eat…sandwiches!
Sun Bread: Given that the sunshine is a recurring symbol throughout our Rapunzel theme, Ayla’s amazing nana is baking sun-shaped bread for the party. It will be the perfect thematic addition!

Rapunzel Party Games & Entertainment: Fun Activities for All Ages

Pin the Frying Pan on Flynn Rider: This game is a twist on the classic “pin the tail on the donkey.” We drew a poster of Flynn’s face and printed out frying pans for the guests to pin. Get ready to bop Flynn with that frying pan!
Limbo: We’re attaching a braid to an old broomstick to create a Rapunzel-themed limbo stick for our dance party. How low can you go under Rapunzel’s hair?
Photo Booth: We’re setting up a DIY photo booth with a fun backdrop and props. This will allow everyone to take fun, memorable photos to commemorate the party. We ordered this backdrop for some sparkle, and are making some accessories attached to sticks for the guests to use in the photos.
Face Painter: We’ve hired a local face painter to come and work her magic during the party. Kids can transform into Rapunzel, Pascal, or other characters from the movie.
