Practice Paper: One sheet of standard 8.5″ x 11″ copy paper. This will allow you to test the pleating techniques before working with your final paper.
Translucent Paper: One rectangular sheet of thin, crisp, translucent paper measuring 24″ wide x 37″ long. The translucency will allow light to filter through beautifully. Consider using vellum paper or a similar lightweight option.

Step 1: Mastering the Basic Pleat

Begin by practicing the basic pleating technique with your scrap paper. This will help you get a feel for the process before working with your delicate translucent paper.

Measure and Mark: Using your ruler and pencil, measure and mark the outside edges of your practice paper. These marks will serve as your guide for folding.
Create Alternating Folds: Starting at the top of the paper and working your way down, fold alternating mountain and valley folds along the marked lines. A mountain fold is a fold where the crease rises upwards, while a valley fold is where the crease dips downwards. Try to maintain consistent spacing between your folds (approximately 1/2 inch is a good starting point).
Crease the Folds: Use your bone folder to firmly crease each folded edge. This will ensure crisp, clean pleats. The resulting pleats should overlap, resembling the pleats in a kilt.

Step 2: Folding the Vertical Stacked Pleats

This step introduces a new pleating technique to create stacked pleats, which are essential for shaping the lamp shade into a sphere.

Mark Increments: On both the top and bottom edges of your paper, mark 1-inch increments for a total of 7 inches. These marks will guide your vertical folds.
Fold Alternating Lines: Starting on the left edge and working across the paper, mountain-fold and then valley-fold along the marked lines. Ensure the folds are precise and consistent.
Crease Firmly: Use your bone folder to firmly crease each folded edge, ensuring the pleats are sharply defined.
Rotate the Paper: Rotate the paper so it is horizontal, with the long extending edge positioned at the back.

Step 3: Shaping the Sphere (Practice)

This is where the magic happens! You’ll begin to see the sphere take shape as you manipulate the pleats.

Pull the Center Pleats: Holding the paper firmly where marked with stars in the image (typically near the center), gently pull the center pleats outward in an arc.
Shape Surrounding Pleats: Continue to shape the paper by arching the pleats of each row, working your way outwards from the center. Be patient and take your time, gradually coaxing the paper into a rounded form.
Observe the Sphere: Notice how the practice sheet produces a quarter-slice of a sphere. This will give you an idea of what to expect with the larger sheet.

Step 4: Preparing the Lamp Shade Paper

Now that you’ve mastered the basic techniques, it’s time to work with your translucent paper. Repeat step 1 and step 2 with the larger sheet.

Reinforce the Top Edge: To create a stronger top edge for your lamp shade, fold the top edge 1 inch to the back side, creating a double-layered edge.
Repeat Step 1: Measure and mark your paper for the lamp shade, just as you did in Step 1. Mountain-fold and valley-fold the marked lines.
Secure Pleats with Tape:Since this paper is much larger than your practice sheet, use removable tape to hold the pleats in place as you work. This prevents the pleats from splaying out and becoming misaligned. Place long vertical strips of tape across several pleats at a time, spacing the tape about every 8″ to 10″.

Step 5: Folding Vertical Stacked Pleats (Lamp Shade)

Repeat step 2 on the larger sheet of paper to create the vertical stacked pleats.

Repeat Step 2: Fold the vertical stacked pleats every inch, alternating the mountain and valley folds and stacking the pleats accurately atop one another.
Punch a Hole: In the left upper corner of the stacked pleats, punch a hole about ¼” down and in from the edge through all the pleats. This will be used to thread the twine.

Step 6: Securing the Top of the Shade

Gather the top of the shade to begin forming the spherical shape.

Thread the Twine: Thread a piece of twine through the hole you punched in the previous step.
Cinch the Top: Cinch the top of the shade by pulling the twine.
Tie a Bow: Loosely tie the twine in a bow rather than a knot, as you may need to adjust the size of the opening later.

Step 7: Creating the Seam

The seam joins the ends of the paper to form a continuous shape.

Remove Tape: Remove the tape securing the pleats.
Overlap the End Pleats: Overlap the end pleats, right over left, so the seam sits in the valley of the pleat.
Apply Glue: Lift up the upper edge and swipe glue stick along the lower edge.
Interlock the Pleats: Reposition the edges to make the seam, interlocking the horizontal pleats on the back of one edge with the horizontal pleats on the front of the other edge, so the form appears continuous.
Pinch Together: Pinch the top and bottom edges together until the glue sets.

Step 8: Shaping the Sphere (Final)

Repeat Step 3: Once the glue has set, repeat Step 3 to shape the sphere. Holding the paper firmly, pull each pleat in one row outward in an arc.
Evenly Shape the Pleats:Continue shaping the pleats of each row into arcs. Take your time as you move through the shaping process, and be sure that the shade is evenly shaped on all sides. Looking at the shape in profile will help you see if it’s balanced.

Finishing Touches and Safety Considerations
