Embarking on Our Gardening Journey: From Black Thumbs to Green Dreams

Let’s be honest: I wasn’t born with a green thumb. While my parents possess a natural knack for gardening, that gene seems to have skipped me entirely. If anything, my thumbs are more of a black hue, making it a minor miracle that we haven’t managed to kill off our low-maintenance succulents.

However, our daughter harbors a deep desire to cultivate her own vegetables and flowers during the summer months, alongside her love for Barbies. Since we purchased our home, she’s been constantly asking for her very own garden. Due to the whirlwind of construction and the arrival of our new baby, we had to postpone her request. But now that things are finally settling down, we’re excited to start planning and building her dream garden.

Here’s a glimpse into our vision for our backyard vegetable garden:

Raised Bed Garden: Maximizing Space and Accessibility

We plan to construct a sturdy frame to house a modestly sized raised bed garden in our backyard. Given that the soil near the southwest corner of our house is rocky and the land is sloped, a raised bed seemed like the most practical and effective solution. Ideally, we’d love to incorporate a fence or greenhouse-style frame to deter those pesky neighborhood rabbits from feasting on our precious produce.

Choosing What to Grow: Simple Selections for Success

Before diving in, we conducted thorough research on which produce would thrive best in our garden’s conditions. Planning a vegetable garden can be overwhelming with the sheer amount of information available. Considering our limited gardening experience, we’ve decided to keep things simple and manageable. Our daughter’s requests were straightforward: tomatoes, carrots, peas, and kale. (Yes, you read that right – kale! She’s quite the enigma.)

We’re eagerly awaiting the snow to melt and the ground to thaw so we can begin constructing our raised bed frame. We’re hoping this will happen by May, as we’re all ready for winter to be over.
