Materials You’ll Need:

Before you start, gather all the necessary materials. Having everything on hand will streamline the process and ensure a smooth and enjoyable crafting experience.

  • Spray Paint: Choose a color that complements your existing decor or adds a bold pop of contrast. Consider using a paint specifically designed for furniture for a durable finish.
  • Sandpaper: Essential for preparing the stool’s base for painting. Use a medium-grit sandpaper to smooth out any imperfections and create a better surface for the paint to adhere to.
  • Scissors: A sharp pair of scissors is crucial for cutting the fabric neatly and precisely.
  • Fabric in an Interesting Pattern: This is where you can really let your personality shine! Choose a fabric with a pattern, color, and texture that you love. Consider the durability of the fabric, especially if the stool will be used frequently.
  • Staple Gun: A staple gun is used to securely attach the new fabric to the stool’s seat. Make sure you have plenty of staples on hand.
  • Spray Sealant (Optional): A clear coat spray sealant will protect the newly painted base and ensure a long-lasting finish.
  • Screwdriver (Potentially): To remove the seat, if necessary.
  • Pliers (Potentially): For removing old staples.
  • Measuring Tape: To accurately measure the seat for fabric cutting.

Step-by-Step Guide: Refinishing and Reupholstering Your Stool

Follow these detailed instructions to transform your vintage stool into a beautiful and functional piece of furniture.

Step 1: Removing the Fabric Seat

Begin by carefully removing the fabric seat from the stool’s base. In my case, the upholstered pad wasn’t attached; it simply sat inside the lip of the stool, making it incredibly easy to remove. If your pad is attached, don’t worry! You should be able to remove it by simply unscrewing a few screws from underneath the stool. Use a screwdriver that fits the screws properly to avoid stripping them. If there are any old staples present, use pliers to carefully remove them.

Step 2: Sanding the Base

With the seat removed, it’s time to prepare the base for painting. Use sandpaper to gently sand the entire base, paying close attention to any rough spots or imperfections. This will create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to properly. After sanding, be sure to wipe off any dust or debris with a clean, damp cloth. A clean surface is essential for a flawless paint job.

Step 3: Painting the Base

Now for the fun part: painting! Apply several thin coats of spray paint to the stool’s base, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. This will prevent drips and ensure an even, professional-looking finish. Be sure to use the spray paint in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask to protect yourself from fumes. Once the final coat of paint is dry, consider applying a clear coat spray sealant to protect the finish and add extra durability. Let the sealant dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Reupholstering the Seat

Time to give the seat a fresh new look! The old fabric on my stool was very secure, so rather than removing it (which can be a messy and time-consuming process), I decided to cover right over it. First, measure the seat and cut a piece of fabric that is roughly 3 inches larger than the seat on all sides. This extra fabric will give you plenty of room to work with when stapling.

Position the fabric on top of the seat, centering the pattern as desired. Begin stapling the fabric to the underside of the seat, starting with one staple in the center of each side. This will help to keep the fabric taut and prevent wrinkles. Since my fabric had a linear pattern, I needed to ensure that the fabric stayed straight. To achieve this, I stapled the fabric on opposite ends, working my way around the seat in a similar fashion to how you would stretch a canvas over stretcher bars. This technique ensures even tension and prevents the pattern from becoming distorted.

Continue stapling the fabric, working your way around the seat until it is completely secured. Be sure to pull the fabric taut as you staple to avoid any wrinkles or loose areas. Overlap the staples slightly to ensure a secure hold.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Once the fabric is stapled all the way around, carefully cut off any excess fabric, leaving about 1/2 inch of fabric beyond the staples. This will prevent fraying and give the seat a clean, professional look. Finally, turn the seat over and re-secure it to the base, using the same screws (or method) you used to remove it in Step 1.
