Materials You’ll Need

• Three Placemats: Select placemats that are visually appealing and durable. Rectangular placemats work best for this project. Consider the thickness of the placemats for padding.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Now that you’ve gathered all your materials, it’s time to start creating your custom-padded laptop cover! Follow these step-by-step instructions carefully, and don’t hesitate to pause and review each step as needed. Remember, patience and attention to detail are key to achieving a professional and satisfying result.

1. Assess and Cut Placemat Size: Lay your laptop template on one of the placemats to determine the appropriate size. Add approximately 1 inch extra on all sides to allow for seam allowance and padding. Carefully cut out the placemat according to your measurements.
2. Prepare Boxing and Pocket Fabric: Lay out your chosen fabric for the boxing (I used leather from a vintage coat) and cut a strip long enough to extend from the top left edge to the top right edge of the cover. Ensure the strip is wide enough to accommodate a 1-inch total seam allowance and the thickness of your laptop. Next, cut out a pocket from the same fabric. You can use an existing pocket from the repurposed material, such as an inside chest pocket, as I did.

3. Cut the Flap Piece: Cut out the flap piece from the third placemat. Adjust the edge as necessary to match the desired size and shape for your laptop cover’s flap.

4. Add Padding: Layer a cut piece of batting, followed by fusible webbing, onto the wrong side of the front of the cut placemat. Use a hot iron to fuse the webbing, bonding the batting to the placemat. Be cautious to prevent the batting from melting. Repeat this process for the back piece of the laptop cover. Now both the front and back pieces have extra padding. Feel free to add more padding if desired.

5. Stitch Pocket to Back: Stitch the leather (or chosen fabric) pocket to the outside back side of the laptop cover.

6. Attach Magnetic Snap (or Velcro): Mark the desired location for the magnetic snap attachment. I chose to separate the flap section of the placemat by carefully pulling apart the fused top and bottom fabrics. This prevents the metal of the magnetic snap from being visible on the top of the flap piece where the decorative button will be sewn. If you prefer a simpler method, you can opt to stitch on Velcro pieces instead. Bend the sides of the snap outwards to secure it in place.

7. Attach Flap to Back: Pin and stitch the flap piece to the top edge of the back of the laptop cover (the piece to which you just sewed the pocket).

In the picture, I initially left extra room for folding over the flap and topstitching. However, I ultimately decided to remove that extra fabric and stitch the edges evenly for a cleaner look.

8. Attach Remaining Snap Piece: Mark the location and attach the other magnetic piece to the front of the cover, ensuring that the flap will snap securely in place. Leave enough room to accommodate the laptop when it is inside the cover.
9. Attach Boxing: Stitch the leather (or chosen fabric) boxing to the front of the laptop cover. Trim off any excess fabric at the top left and top right edges.

10. Create Lining: Stitch your cut-out lining pieces together in the same way you constructed the outer cover.
11. Assemble Cover: Turn the laptop top cover right side out. Slip the laptop cover into the sewn lining cover, right sides to right sides. Pin around the top edge, leaving a 5-inch opening for turning the cover right side out.

12. Turn Right Side Out: Pull the laptop cover through the 5-inch opening until the right side of the cover is completely exposed.

This step can be a little intimidating at first, but it becomes easier with practice.

Don’t be alarmed if it looks a little strange at this point. It will all come together once it’s fully turned right side out.

See? It’s starting to take shape!

13. Finish the Edges: Push the lining to the inside of the cover. Fold under the fabric edge of the 5-inch opening. Pin the opening closed and topstitch evenly all the way around the cover.

This step can be a bit tricky, so proceed slowly. You may need to assist the needle by manually turning the wheel as you go.
