These place card holders are incredibly easy to make, requiring minimal tools and materials. They are also virtually free, as you can source the wood from your backyard or local park. The beauty of this project lies in its simplicity and the natural character each piece of wood brings. Materials and Tools You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather the following materials and tools:

  • Found Tree Branch: Look for a branch that is approximately 1″ to 1 1/2″ in diameter. Drier wood is preferable, as it will be easier to cut and will season more quickly.
  • Handsaw: A pull saw, hack saw, coping saw, or miter box will work perfectly for this project. Choose the saw that you are most comfortable using.
  • Wire or Nylon Brush: This will be used to clean the branch and remove any loose bark, lichen, or moss.
  • Vice, Clamp, or Locking Pliers: You’ll need a way to securely hold the branch steady while you cut it.
  • Computer and Printer (Optional): For printing the free place card templates, if desired.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these simple steps to create your own rustic wood place card holders:

Step 1: Prepare the Branch

Carefully examine the branch and identify the straightest sections. While small knots and bumps add character, avoid areas with sharp angles, as these may compromise the balance of the finished place card holder. Use the wire or nylon brush to remove any loose bark, lichen, moss, or dirt from the surface of the branch. Wipe the branch clean with a damp cloth to ensure a smooth and clean surface.

Step 2: Cut the Rounds

Using your chosen saw, cut several rounds from the branch. Aim for a thickness of approximately 5/8″ to 3/4″ for each round. Don’t worry about precise measurements; just cut what looks like the right size for your branch. Remember, slight variations in size and shape will only add to the rustic charm of the finished product.

Step 3: Create the Card Slot

The most important step is creating a slot for the place cards. The width of the slot should be slightly wider than the thickness of your place card stock. I used a medium-weight cover stock, which is about 1/64″ of an inch thick. Most small hand saw blades, such as those found on pull saws or coping saws, have a thickness of around 1/32″, making them perfect for cutting the slot. If you have a variety of tools, choose a saw with a thin blade that is appropriate for the thickness of your card stock.

You could even use a rotary cutter, like a Dremel, if you prefer. However, be sure to maintain a steady hand to ensure a consistent slot width.

Step 4: Cut the Slot

Securely hold each wood round in a vice, clamp, or with pliers. Use the saw to carefully cut down through the center of the round, approximately halfway through its thickness. If possible, angle the blade slightly backward as you cut, so that the card will lean back a bit when inserted. This will help prevent the card from falling forward.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

If the branch was relatively dry when you found it, you can stain, clear coat, or seal the wood with wax to protect it and enhance its natural beauty. However, I prefer the natural look of the unfinished wood, so I left mine au natural. I may consider finishing them next year once they have completely dried out. For now, I love the rustic and unrefined appearance.

Step 6: Add Your Place Cards

You can use image editing software to add the names digitally, or simply write them by hand for a more personal touch. Print the place cards on your chosen card stock, cut them out, and insert them into the slots on your wood place card holders.
