Step 2: Creating the Leg Tubes

Now, it’s time to fashion the leg tubes. Imagine the coat lying flat, inside out. Align one side of the crotch slit with one side of the coat opening (right sides together). Sew a seam upwards, stopping where the slit begins. This creates the initial structure of one leg.

Repeat this process for the other leg, ensuring that both legs are symmetrical and allow for comfortable movement. Use a sewing machine if you have one, setting the straight stitch to the longest length. A leather needle and upholstery thread are highly recommended for working with the thick fur fabric.

Step 3: Adding Fur Embellishments

Take your second fur coat and carefully rip out the lining. This will leave you with just the fur, which you’ll use to add texture and volume to your Bigfoot costume.

Tear or cut the fur into two long, wide strips, and many other short pieces. For a cleaner cut, use a utility knife to cut the fur from the backside, minimizing damage to the fur itself.

Attach these cut pieces to the legs of your costume, focusing on the front for a more prominent Bigfoot-like appearance. The longer pieces should be placed strategically to create a shaggy, wild effect.

Step 4: Crafting the Chest Piece

With the leftover fur, create a contrasting chest piece. This will add visual interest and break up the monotony of the full-fur look. Consider using a different shade or texture of fur for the chest piece to make it stand out.

When piecing the fur together, ensure that the nap (the direction the fur naturally lays) is hanging downwards, towards the floor. This will create a more realistic and flowing appearance. Remember to sew with the direction of the nap to avoid any awkward bunching or pulling.

Step 5: Fine-Tuning and Finishing Touches

For any hard-to-reach spots or areas requiring extra reinforcement, don’t hesitate to sew by hand using a leather needle and very strong thread. Hand sewing allows for greater precision and control in delicate areas.

Once you’ve finished sewing, use a comb to gently comb the fur away from the stitch lines. This will help to conceal the seams and blend the fur together seamlessly.

Step 6: Creating the Corset Back

To ensure a snug and comfortable fit, create a corset-style back. Make about 5 to 6 holes, approximately 3 inches apart, down the back of both sides of the coat. Stop where the leg tubes begin.

Take your long rope-like tie or cord, attach a safety pin to each end, and lace up the back like a corset. This allows you to adjust the tightness of the costume for a perfect fit.

Step 7: Completing the Look

Congratulations! You’ve successfully created the body of your DIY Bigfoot costume. Now, it’s time to focus on the finishing touches, such as the face, hands, and feet.
