Summer is the perfect season for outdoor lounging, especially in the upper Midwest where every moment spent outside feels like a precious gift. What better way to enjoy this time of year than relaxing on your patio, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the fresh air?
My parents have created a stunning backyard oasis, complete with beautiful gardens, thriving fruit trees, and soothing fountains. They practically live outdoors during the summer months, spending countless hours on their patio. However, the patio furniture, a set of Adirondack chairs, was looking a little worse for wear. Exposed to the elements throughout spring, summer, and fall, the paint was peeling and chipping, particularly on the armrests. It was time for a patio chair makeover!
The first step in refreshing these chairs was to remove the old, peeling paint to create a clean surface for the new finish. Anyone who’s tackled a furniture refinishing project knows that stripping paint can be a tedious and frustrating process. Adirondack chairs, with their numerous angles, curves, and hard-to-reach spots, only amplify the challenge. The thought of sanding these chairs by hand seemed like an endless, messy undertaking.
Instead, we opted for a Wagner Furno 750 heat gun to strip the paint, and it completely transformed the project. This tool directs a concentrated stream of hot air onto the painted surface, causing the paint to blister and bubble. Once the paint is softened, it can be easily scraped away with a putty knife or similar tool. Having used chemical strippers and sandpaper in the past, I can confidently say that the heat gun method was superior in every way. It was faster, cleaner, and required significantly less effort. This simple tool made this patio chair makeover a breeze.
After removing the majority of the old paint with the heat gun, we lightly sanded the chairs to create a smooth, even surface for the new paint to adhere to. While hand-painting the chairs was an option, it would have taken days to complete and likely resulted in noticeable brushstrokes. We needed a faster and more efficient way to achieve a professional-looking finish.
That’s where our trusty Wagner FLEXiO 3000 paint sprayer came to the rescue. The FLEXiO 3000 is designed to spray a variety of materials, including unthinned latex and oil-based paints, primers, and stains. It delivers a fine, even finish that resembles the texture of a roller, making it perfect for projects like this where brushing would be time-consuming and rolling is impractical. We’ve even used a Wagner paint sprayer indoors and were pleasantly surprised by the results on interior walls. - Adjust Paint Volume and Fan Power Settings: Experiment with the paint volume and fan power settings to find the ideal combination for your specific project and paint type. Consult the instruction manual for guidance on how these settings affect the finish.
- Select the Appropriate Nozzle Head: The FLEXiO 3000 typically comes with two nozzle heads: a detail nozzle for smaller areas and intricate designs, and a wide area nozzle for larger surfaces. Choose the nozzle that best suits the size and complexity of your project.
Having used several Wagner paint sprayers for various DIY projects, I can confidently say that the updated FLEXiO design is my favorite. It provides more consistent coverage with less overspray, and the numbered paint flow dial is a convenient addition. We repurposed an old jute rug that had seen better days by taping off a simple border. Using the FLEXiO 3000, we sprayed a bold black border onto the rug, instantly giving it a fresh, new look.
