Let’s take a closer look at each corded glue gun and understand why they earned their respective ratings.

Recommended: DeWalt Rapid Heat Ceramic Glue Gun

The DeWalt Rapid Heat Ceramic Glue Gun stands out as our top corded pick, and it’s also the most budget-friendly option. Priced affordably, this glue gun is a straightforward, no-frills model. It’s a simple plug-and-play device with a single high-temperature setting. However, it boasts several impressive features:

  • Light Indicator: A convenient light indicates when the gun is running, eliminating the need to trace the cord or touch the nozzle to check if it’s hot.
  • Exceptional Stability: The DeWalt features a super-stable kickstand and a rubberized hilt, preventing accidental tip-overs. During our tests, it remained firmly in place even when bumped.
  • Rapid Heating: True to its name, the DeWalt heats up remarkably quickly. It was ready to use in just about 45 seconds, outperforming most of its competitors by a significant margin. The melted glue flowed smoothly and clearly.

Weighing in at just 8.30 ounces, the DeWalt is the lightest model we tested. The handle is ergonomically designed, providing a comfortable grip for both small and large hands. For general crafting and light DIY projects, we wholeheartedly recommend the DeWalt for its exceptional quality, functionality, and value.

Note: Some Amazon reviewers have reported issues with the glue gun not feeding glue sticks properly. We did not encounter this problem during our testing. However, if you experience this issue, cleaning the gripper with isopropyl alcohol may resolve the problem.

Not Recommended: Surebonder Pro 2-100

We had high hopes for the Surebonder Pro 2-100. Priced around $31, it offers several attractive features, including a dedicated on/off switch, a polarized plug, and a comfortable rubber-polymer grip. The large ergonomic trigger is also a plus, especially for users with joint issues. This model also supports wrench-free interchangeable tips, although none are included.

One immediate drawback was the need to install the metal kickstand ourselves. While not a major issue, the installed kickstand proved to be unstable, making the Surebonder Pro2-100 prone to tipping. Weighing approximately 11 ounces, it’s relatively easy to handle.

Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this model due to its inadequate heating performance. Despite the manufacturer’s claim of reaching maximum heat in 2 to 3 minutes, the glue remained thick and opaque even after waiting longer. Ultimately, it performed similarly to a basic, less expensive glue gun.

Avoid: Stanley GR 100 Glue-Pro DualMelt

While we were disappointed with the Surebonder Pro 2-100, we had higher expectations for the Stanley GR 100 Glue-Pro DualMelt. Priced around $34, it seemed to offer everything we could want in a glue gun:

  • High and low temperature options
  • 18 – 4” glue sticks included
  • Two interchangeable tips (extended round and flat)
  • 15-minute auto shut-off
  • Light indicator and removable safety cover

It also features a rubber-polymer over-mold for a secure grip and a manageable weight of 11.5 ounces. However, our experience was far from positive.

The 80-watt Stanley GR 100 Glue-Pro took an excessive 10 minutes to reach maximum heat – the longest of all models tested. The plastic kickstand failed to keep the gun upright. The standard tip was too short, causing glue to wick over the edge.

The safety tip cover made it difficult to glue in tight spaces. The extended tip required a wrench for installation, unlike the Surebonder’s tool-free design.

Even worse, when using the extended tip, the hot tip touched the work surface when the gun was placed on its stand, creating a safety hazard. We strongly advise avoiding the Stanley GR 100 Glue-Pro DualMelt, especially when the superior DeWalt is available.

Premium Choice: Surebonder PRO2-220

After our underwhelming experience with the Surebonder Pro 2-100, we were pleasantly surprised by the Surebonder PRO2-220 220-Watt Adjustable Temperature Industrial Glue Gun. Despite its higher price tag, this glue gun is worth every penny.

The 220-watt Surebonder Pro2-220 boasts an array of impressive features:

  • Exceptional storage case for glue sticks and tips
  • Industrial-sized stand for unparalleled stability
  • Illuminated on/off switch
  • Adjustable temperature control (220F to 400F)
  • Stroke adjustment for controlling glue stick advancement
  • Safety cord and grounded plug

The Pro2-220 also features an ergonomic trigger, which is ideal for users with joint issues. Unlike its smaller sibling, the Pro2-220 heats up rapidly. Set at 400 degrees, the glue gun was fully heated in just 2 minutes, producing perfectly clear glue.

Despite its exceptional performance, there are a few minor drawbacks. The Pro2-220 emitted a peculiar, flowery smell initially, which dissipated after about a week. It’s also heavier and larger than other models, making it less suitable for casual crafters. However, for serious DIY enthusiasts, the Surebonder Pro2-220 is an outstanding choice.

Cordless Glue Gun Review: Cut the Cord and Create

Cordless glue guns offer the ultimate freedom and flexibility for crafting and DIY projects. We tested two popular models to determine which one offers the best performance and value.

Photo: Black & Decker 125 Watt 20v Max by JoAnn Moser

Great Cordless Option: Black & Decker 125-watt 20v Max

The Black & Decker’s 125-watt 20v Max Lithium Cordless glue gun is part of the Black & Decker 20v Max Lithium System. We were excited to test a cordless glue gun, and it did not disappoint.

The B & D impressed us with its comfortable rubber-polymer over-mold and balanced feel when combined with a 2Ah lithium-ion battery. The battery does add some weight. The gun alone weighs about 15 ounces, but with the battery, it increases to 1 pound 12 ounces. A momentary LED switch stays illuminated when the gun is powered on. The heat-up time was an impressive 90 seconds.

Other notable features include:

  • Solid trigger for smooth and easy glue application
  • Perfectly sized glue tip
  • Cordless design for enhanced freedom and portability

One issue we encountered was the momentary LED blinking off after a minute. However, fully charging the battery resolved this problem. While the battery adds weight, it also provides a stable base, preventing the gun from tipping over. We recommend this glue gun for both crafters and DIYers, but with some considerations.

The glue gun itself is reasonably priced, but this assumes you already own a Black & Decker 20v Max series battery and charger. If purchased separately, the battery and charger can add significantly to the overall cost. Alternatively, you can purchase the B & D cordless glue gun ensemble, which includes the gun, battery, and charger. While the initial investment may be higher, the cordless freedom it provides is worth considering.

Unique Option: The Master Appliance GG-100K Master PortaPro

The 200 watt Master Appliance GG-100K Master PortaPro Butane Powered Glue Gun Kit is a unique and compelling option. Running on butane, this glue gun offers complete off-the-grid portability.

The PortaPro comes with a storage case, eight glue sticks, and three interchangeable glue tips: flat, needle, and smaller round. Like the Stanley, changing the tips requires a wrench, which is slightly inconvenient. The kit does not include butane, so you will need to purchase it separately.

Filling the glue gun’s butane tank is straightforward. Simply invert the gun, insert the butane canister’s nozzle into the valve, and pump. The instructions state that you need to wait a few minutes for the gas to stabilize before lighting the gun. To ignite the gun, push the fuel flow control up and turn it until you hear the gas hissing. A quick pull of the ignition switch ignites the gun. The Master claims that the gun will reach full heat in 3 to 4 minutes, but ours was ready in about 2 minutes.

At only 15.30 ounces with a full tank of gas, the PortaPro is lighter than the Black & Decker. However, it requires butane, which needs to be replaced. A full tank of fuel lasts 140 minutes.

Compared to the Black & Decker, the PortaPro has a larger-than-average handle to accommodate the butane tank, which may make it cumbersome for some users. However, the ergonomic trigger is comparable to the Surebonder models. For users needing complete portability and lightweight design, the Master Appliance GG-100K Master PortaPro Butane Powered Glue Gun Kit could be the perfect solution.
