If you’re using a 12 x 12 inch piece of wood as your base, you’ll need to cut the flashing to be approximately 44 inches long. This allows for enough material to wrap around all four sides of the wood, with a little overlap for a clean finish. It’s always best to measure twice and cut once to avoid mistakes.

Tip: When cutting the flashing, wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges.

Step 2: Attaching the Flashing to the Base (Side 1)

Position the short edge of the flashing along one corner of your wooden base. Use a hammer to gently secure a thumbtack in place, holding the flashing against the wood. Apply a small amount of E6000 glue along the edge of the wood to provide extra adhesion. Pull the flashing taut against the glued edge and secure the other end with another thumbtack.

Step 3: Securing the Remaining Sides

Move to the second side and continue applying glue along the edge of the wood. The glue acts as a temporary adhesive, making it easier to position the flashing and hammer in the thumbtacks. Repeat the process of pulling the flashing taut and securing it with thumbtacks.

The glue will help the flashing to stick to the wood while you’re hammering the thumbtacks.

Step 4: Completing the Wrap

Continue working your way around the piece of wood, gluing and tacking the flashing as you go. Once you’ve reached the end, begin adding additional thumbtacks along the bottom edge, filling in the spaces between the existing ones. For now, avoid adding any tacks to the first edge where you started.

Up until this point, you have not bent the flashing anywhere except on the bottom corners… so it should look sort of rounded on the top edge. Now is the time to square it off. Use your hands to gently bend the flashing so that you form the corners of the box.

Step 5: Finishing the Edge and Adding the Final Touches

You should now have a couple of inches of excess flashing remaining. Use your tin snips to trim it down, leaving about an inch of overlap. Carefully remove the thumbtack from the first edge and slip the excess flashing underneath, creating a clean and seamless finish. Be extremely careful of the cut edge, as it can be very sharp. Consider covering it with scotch tape for added protection. Now, add thumbtacks to this side as well, securing the overlapping edge.

Last, add your adhesive letters to one side – and you’re finished!

The box’s measurements can be adjusted if you need it to be a specific size, but I find this to be a handy size for anything from towels to craft supplies.

The thumbtacks look like rivets, giving it a cool industrial sort of vibe. I chose gold adhesive letters for a bit of contrast, but you could also stick with silver for consistency.
